Digital Crime Scene Investigator

This two day course  focuses on the concept of "Field Forensics," as it relates to computer-related evidence.  The objective of the course is to train responders to perform a preliminary examination of digital evidence on-scene in a forensically sound manner. 

This course is a response to needs by investigators dealing with the following situations:

1) Digital Knock and Talks where the search is based on consent
2) Search Warrants where an immediate examination may aid the investigation

This course has been approved by MCOLES for the use of Law Enforcement Distribution funds (302 Funds)

 

Course Objectives

The trainee will possess the knowledge and skills required to preview a computer for digital evidence.  No technical knowledge is required for the course. The trainee will receive hands-on practical experience. 

At the completion of training, the trainee will be able to:

1) Understand the legal, tactical, and technical aspects of performing an on-site preliminary examination of digital evidence.

2) Prepare storage media for evidence collection by sterilizing, partitioning, and formatting the device.

3) Perform a preliminary examination of a computer searching for digital images, video, and text-based evidence in a forensically sound manner.
