Digital Evidence Technician

This 5 day course focuses on the goal of creating an Evidence Technician that specializes in the handling and collection of Digital Evidence. 

This course is designed to develop a cooperation between the officer and the forensic examiner to expedite the prosecution of technology based crimes. 

This course is perfect for the officer that wants to collect the most evidence possible at a digital crime scene.  It is also an ideal beginning for those officers seeking to become forensic examiners.

This course has been approved by MCOLES for the use of Law Enforcement Distribution funds (302 Funds)

 

Course Objectives

The trainee will possess the knowledge and skills required to perform as a Digital Evidence Technician.  No technical knowledge is required for the course. The trainee will receive hands-on practical experience. 

At the completion of training, the trainee will be able to:

  1. Properly handle, collect, and document digital evidence.

  2. Understand the legal, tactical and technical aspects of performing an on-site
    preliminary examination of digital evidence searching for digital images, video, and
    text-based evidence in a forensically sound manner.

  3. Perform a preliminary examination of digital evidence in a lab setting following the execution of a search warrant. This includes using Linux-based forensic software and Windows-based tools in conjunction with write blocking to maintain forensically sound evidence.

  4. Prepare storage media for evidence collection by sterilizing, partitioning and formatting the device.

  5. Collect volatile data (RAM dumps) at digital crime scenes prior to pulling the plug.

  6. Make forensic copies of digital evidence to provide to the forensic examiner  this includes post mortem acquisitions (powered off) and live acquisitions.
